Essay Writing

Essay Writing is a colourful and engaging course, which has been produced exclusively for home-educators. It will show you everything you need to know to be able to write cracking essays, on any topic. I don't assume you have any prior knowledge about essay writing, so I'll take you from the basics of sentence and paragraph structure, right the way through to how to plan and write effective essays. A range of typical essay styles are covered in the course, such as compare and contrast, analyse and explore and argue and discuss, together with plenty of practical exercises and detailed tutor feedback. You'll learn about essay presentation, too, and there's even a section on how to write essays for exams. I'll show you how to write references as well (which is important if you're going on to study at college) and there are six tutor marked assignments, together with unlimited phone and email support.

IGCSE English Language (AQA, Edexcel Spec A, Edexcel Spec B or CIE)

The IGCSE English Language course doesn't presuppose any prior knowledge about English, apart from the basic reading and writing skills of an average 12 year old. However it will show you everything you need to know in order pass the exam within 8 - 18 months (based on the average time taken by students). Unlike some correspondence courses, which can be dry in tone, this course reflects the joy in learning, which I feel should be part and parcel of any English study and should enhance a lifelong love of reading and (hopefully) writing.

The course consists of 11 chapters, (10 for the Edexcel courses), which cover all the reading, writing, and speaking/listening tasks you will need for the exam; these include comprehension, composition and creative writing.

I give plenty of practical guidance, together with short exercises to test your learning, and I'll tell you all about exam technique. There are 11 tutor marked assignments (10 for the Edexcel courses), including a mock exam, and the option of doing extra past paper practice. As with all my courses there is unlimited (within reason!) phone and email support.

In addition to an attractive and engaging full colour course book, complete with audio CDs, you will receive a comprehensive range of e-materials to support your study, including a fully annotated version of the anthology (for the Edexcel Spec A course).

By the time you take the exam you will have had good, solid practice and feedback in each of the exam tasks - and hopefully you will have enjoyed the process, too!

IGCSE English Literature (Edexcel only)

The IGCSE English Literature course has been written in the same friendly and approachable style as my other courses, and builds on the skills taught in the English Language course. For this reason, many students like to study the two courses together, although it isn't a necessity. We'll be looking closely at the classic texts Pride and Prejudice and The Importance of Being Earnest, and you'll learn about the fascinating context in which these texts were produced together with something about the incredible lives of their authors. You'll learn how Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde created such vivid and memorable characters as Mr Darcy and Lady Bracknell, together with an understanding of they wove such engaging stories around them - stories which have stood the test of time. The course will not only prepare you for the exam but will also give you a secure grounding in the study of English Literature and help with essay writing skills. I hope that by the time you complete the course, you'll have developed a lifelong love of literature and books as well as passing the exam, of course!  More...

Pre-IGCSE English Language

The pre-IGCSE English Language course has been created for students who are aged between 11 and 13 (so eligible to start my IGCSE English Language course) but who feel they need a bit more preparation and 'brushing up of the basics' before embarking on the IGCSE English Language course. It combines the essential elements of Word Weavers and Essay Writing, and gently orientates students towards the reading and writing tasks that they will eventually undertake on the IGCSE English Language course.

As with my other courses, the pre-IGCSE English Language course does not presuppose any prior knowledge (other than an ability to read and write). It covers fundamental English skills in an age-appropriate way (including sentences, paragraphs and punctuation) while introducing the different genres and styles of writing that will be encountered in the IGCSE English Language course, including essays. Learning to 'read for meaning' (a core IGCSE level skill) is also taught.  More...

Word Weavers

Beware! Words have powers! Do you think you can learn the spells to master them?

Word Weavers is an exciting interactive story, which you and your child can read together. So although it covers everything about English which your child will need to know between the ages of 8 and 13, it is radically different from most KS2 and KS3 English courses. When your child has completed the course they will have the tools and skills to begin a GCSE or IGCSE syllabus
